The Town of Erin has responded to a release from the Upper Credit Humane Society who says their lease at their location will nit be renewed past May 2028 forcing them to either relocate or close.

The Town says they have long given them lease extensions at a fair a reasonable price and given them time to prepare for their future while also providing several community grants.

The Town adds they have been transparent with the UCHS communicating their current use of the property does not comply with the Town’s Zoning Bylaw and Official Plan policies.

The town adds the UCHS does not provide contractual animal control services or shelter for abandoned or stray dogs on behalf of the town who employ an animal control officer who’s responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of dogs and the public.

In a statement the UCHS writes “We are a vital local service. We rescue and rehabilitate stray and surrendered animals, match them with loving families, support pet owners in crisis, re-unite lost pets with their families, and provide education and volunteer opportunities for residents of all ages. Our work has touched thousands of lives for more than three decades. UCHS helps to make Erin a more compassionate place to live.”
