Comments from the Premier around speed cameras just being a cash grab has drawn some thoughts from those in Wellington County.
Earlier this year the county launched a pilot program to have cameras set up in what has been listed as community safety zones.
Ford has since gone further saying he will outlaw municipal speed cameras this fall.
Mapleton Mayor and the County’s Roads Committee Chair, Gregg Davidson says there is a better way of addressing some issues with cameras without removing them.
“The camera system we have here are just in front of our schools. In other locations across the province they have them in other areas, not just schools that are just on regular roadways. I think that’s what some of the Premier and staff need to look at is how can we change the regulations to make it a viable program in Ontario without getting rid of it.” said Davidson
Davidson says this pilot project has shown results with a 62 per cent compliance rate of the speed at these targeted locations with revenue generated from the cameras being used for road safety initiatives.
