A pair of banners to be hung in downtown Mitchell has been a compromise from West Perth council after shutting down the idea of a rainbow crosswalk.
First proposed by councilor Ceri Bell, fellow members cited liability concerns and costs are the main reasons for those being opposed to the crosswalk.
Bell who is also chair of the Mitchell BIA said a rainbow crosswalk would help enhance the downtown core of Mitchell.
Operations Manager Mike Kraemer is his report to council say roadway line painting is provincially regulated and must follow the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM.) The OTM must include exact specifications.
Kraemer also mentioning the cost for the crosswalk would be estimated at $8000-$15,000. While banners are being considered some councilors have also raised their concerns of the precedent it could set.
Councilor Trentowsky says veterans have earned the right to have banners, but by having opening it up for one group, he believes it could lead to more groups also wanting banners.
