The Township of Centre Wellington advised residents that drains and sewers are designed for human waste, toilet paper and wastewater only.

They say when fat, oils and grease are poured into drains, the liquid cools and forms a hardened mass in your sewer pipe, which over time can block sewage flow.

They say to avoid sewage backups and help protect the environment by following a few simple tips.

  • Wipe out greasy pots, pans & utensils with a paper towel before placing in the sink
  • Place grease & food scraps into a green bin (when available) for curbside collection
  • Use a strainer on the sink to catch food scraps and other solids
  • Place grease in a cup or jar and store it. Once it solidifies properly dispose or use in suet feeders for birds

DON’T

  • Do not pour grease down the sink or in the toilet
  • Do not rinse grease down the sink.
  • Do not use cloth towels or rags to wipe off plates or greasy dishware
