While Bill C-234 has once again after an amendment, been passed in the Senate and now heads back to House of Commons to accept or reject the amendments, senators such as Rob Black is far from pleased on how long this bill has taken to support farmers in an exemption from the federal carbon tax.

The bill aims to exempt fuels used in certain agricultural work such as the use of natural gas and propane for on farm grain drying and barn heating and cooling.

With the amount of back and forth this bill has gone through, Black while speaking in the Senate made note of the frustration farmers have felt over this matter.

“These comments bother me greatly. I’m not proud of what has transpired here in the Senate over the past few weeks with respect to Bill C-234. We have failed a very important segment of our Canadian population and I’m concerned that I have not done by job well enough in the chamber as a senator representing agriculture in Canada.” said Black.

With another step forward, MP’s such as Branden Leslie for Portage-Lisgar says he will do his best to get it back to the Senate once again, without amendments as soon as possible.

While the Bill, should it pass without amendments in House it would be expected back to the Senate and eventually receive Royal Assent however the current history of the Bill suggest it might not be that easy.

While typically the Senate usually sides with the House this has come as a different turn with some senators potentially proposing changes to the Bill which will continue back and forth trades.

Farmer organizations, local farmers and rural representatives have all said this bill needs to pass without any further amendments as this is something widely seen as needed for farmers across Canada.
