North Huron council will be reviewing their flag policy following backlash after it was announced they would not be flying the pride flag for the month of June.
A Huron County librarian made the request to fly the flag at the library but was denied by council citing they want to stick with their flag policy which has been in place since 2010. The policy states only municipal, provincial and federal flags are to fly on township property.
Many community members expressed their wish for council to review and reconsider their policy.
Council voted 5-2 in reviewing the flag policy with Councilors Chris Palmer and Paul Heffer voting against the motion. Palmer in his reasoning why saying by allowing the pride flag to fly, could open the floodgates of any flag to fly on township owned properties.
Reeve Bernie Bailey says there will be better representation for the LGBTQ+ community in North Huron.
The township website will now show their support the community as they currently update the flag policy.
