Wellington North will continue to not perform winter burial at the Mount Forest cemetery.
The township has never had winter burials though some nearby towns and municipalities do offer it such as Minto and Mapleton which is why England Funeral Home in Mount Forest made the request for the town to consider offering it.
The funeral home said offering winter burials is to better service families so they don’t need to reopen wounds of a death when spring arrives for a burial.
Clerk Karen Wallace says they just don’t have the resources to do so.
“We just don’t have the staff, we can charge them whatever we want but we don’t have any increased resources to do it. It would also mean the roads would need to be in the cemetery semi-clear all of the time. You can’t leave them for 2 weeks and expect to get through all the ice and snow, you’ve got increased resources needed to do that.” said Wallace.
Council followed with the staff recommendation to not approve winter burials at the Mount Forest cemetery.
