Wellington North Opting Out of Dog Licensing

Wellington North has opting out of licensing dogs.

Council gave the approval on November 4th on dog licensing which served a purpose to identify and re-unite lost dogs with owners with licensing being the most effective way to provide this service.

However new tools have since grown which has greatly changed how lost dogs can be identified such as micro-chipping, tattooing, social media and personally engraved tags.

Between 2017-2023, licensing sales dropped 58 per cent in that time frame which left taxpayers ponying up animal control services as opposed to owners.

The dangerous dog by law will stay in effect in Wellington North.
