With snow on the ground but spring quickly approaching the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is urging residents to take care when using salt on the sidewalks and their homes, especially if they’re near a watershed.

Salt while used to melt ice and reduce the risk in icy conditions poses a significant threat to water quality. Salt in groundwater can lead to contamination, affecting the quality of water relied on daily.

The UTRCA says its best to clear snow promptly before it compacts into ice, use an alternative to salt such as sand and if some salt is necessary to use a mix of sand and salt and clean up any spilled or excess alt for later use.
