Five families have been displaced following a fire in a basement on Krotz Street.

North Perth Fire Crews were dispatched to the residential fire on Sunday just after 6pm with all three stations responding.

North Perth Fire Chief Janny Pape says a smoke alarm notified the family inside of the blaze while they were on another floor of the home who were able to escape.

One family member was taken to hospital but was released later the same night.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire department has sent their thanks to OPP, Perth County Paramedics and Public Works for their help.

The NPFD reminds residents to test and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
