The deadline has passed and President Donald Trump has imposed 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods, up from 25 per cent on all products not covered by the US Mexico Canada trade agreement.
Trump has cited Canada’s failure to stop fentanyl smuggling as the reason for the new tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney had reached out ahead of the August 1st tariff deadline by no conversations between the two took place.
Officials in Ottawa have repeatedly made note only a minuscule amount of fentanyl entering the US originates from Canada and measures have already been taken to strengthen the border.
