The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down the punishment of life without parole for mass murderers retroactive to the time it was enacted in 2011.

This move gives a large number of sentenced mass murderers in the country the chance to be released from prison in the future.

The ruling written by Chief Justice Richard Wagner determined the punishment is cruel and unusual and therefore illegal under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

This ruling means the man responsible for the Toronto van attack which killed 10 people in 2018, Alek Minassian will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
