Stratford Police are warning residents about a phone scam which has been going around and caught a local victim to send over $10,000 to an unknown person.

Police say the caller pretends to be a Royal Bank of Canada employee warning the victim of fraudulent purchases made on their credit card.

The scammer then asks for gift cards to be sent to a location in California.

The victim had only found they were scammed after following up directly with the bank.

Stratford Police are reminding residents no legitimate financial institutions, businesses or government agencies will request personal information or take payments in gift cards over the phone.
