As the old Red Maple Hotel hotel was lost earlier this week in a blaze in Monkton, many residents have looked back at the history and old memories shared inside.
First built in 1856 by Joseph Bennett, the building saw many name changes over the years from its original, Bennett’s Hotel.
Residents such as Sandra Machan who shared memories first being opened as a restaurant as a kid.
“It was famous for their Sunday Buffets featuring Ribs & Kraut, Turkey & Dressing, Homemade Rice Pudding and their salad bar. The Red Maple was also known to the locals as, The Tavern. When I was younger I remember going there often with my Mom & Dad to get their French fries, while my parents went there to drink and socialize with others in the town. It was the local “watering hole”, where everyone was welcome! I remember my dad, Larry Machan always biking his 10-speed up town to go up there for a beer.”
The Red Maple was more than a social place, it was a key employer for the region hiring many waiters, dishwashers, cooks and bartenders.
Machan, who was employed with her sister and mother recounted many memories, from an employee to customer.
“So many fun times! There were a lot of times, when the hours would be extended on special occasions to have karaoke. That was popular.”
Throughout its time, the Red Maple was a place to gather, enjoy a meal or have drinks with friends.
North Perth crews battled a blaze at the building on Monday which was then knocked down with an excavator.
