A hockey tournament in Palmerston next weekend has all its sights focused on one family and the fundraiser for their six year old daughter.

Mya Martin suffers from Spina Bifida which leaves her without use of her legs and the family is in the process to have a wheelchair accessible home for Mya which will include an elevator.

To help out the family, Winston Shantz is putting on the hockey tournament at the Palmerston Arena on October 20th-21st and taking donations for the family.

Shantz says a goal of $50,000 has been set and he already is feeling the strength of the community.

“People have already been very generous so far and it’s looking like it’ll be possible so that’s very hopeful. If we can shoot over that it’ll be even better but $50,000 is what we set.” Shantz

The tournament will see a series of teams already selected which Shantz says is building off a previous fundraising tournament and teams were eager to come back out and support.

“There will be 8 teams, I believe 6 of the teams from last year are back so that was pretty easy. Everyone that played last year had a great experience and are excited to come back. I found 2 other teams as well in the community. It’s looking like another great tournament, very competitive.”

Action starts on October 20th at 7pm at the Palmerston & District Community Centre Complex.

Cash donations will be accepted at the tournament with those unable to attend but still want to support can send etransfers to [email protected]
