While winter has been hammering the area for the last month, the onset of warmer weather has seen a shift and OPP reminding residents about safety.

OPP across the West Region are reminding the public to stay clear of slippery banks of icy creeks and rivers with rapidly flowing water being barely above freezing point.

Those who could fall into the water risk the dangers of hypothermia.

OPP say to always check ice thickness and it must be at least 10cm thick to be safe for the weight of a person, carry safety gear such as a personal flotation device and an ice pick, never go alone and always supervise children and pets.
