The Ford government is partnering alongside Shoppers Drug Mart to provide Ontario students with free access to menstrual products in schools.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement earlier this morning saying having access to these products is a must to help ensure students can remain in school and maintain their health.
“Menstrual products are of course a necessity not a luxury. For women and girls ensuring they have access to these products is key for their health and successful participation in school.” said Lecce
Lecce adds those who cannot afford menstrual products often stay silent, causing more issues.
“Young students and girls specifically suffer in silence as this issue may not be one they are comfortable identifying or talking about.”
Earlier this year an organization advocating on behalf of Toronto’s youth wrote to Lecce urging to government to implement such a policy in all publicly schools.
