Ontario proposes increased fines for Unscrupulous Builders or New Home Vendors

The maximum fines for canceled purchase agreements or new developments would double from $25,000 to $50,000 per infraction, with no limit to additional penalties.

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson announced today that the province is doing more to protect new home buyers who are faced with unscrupulous builders or new home vendors.

The proposed changes under the New Home Construction Licensing Act would, if passed, increase the maximum fines for canceled purchase agreements or new developments from $25,000 to $50,000 per infraction, with no limit to additional penalties.

The fines would be used to make payments back to consumers adversely affected by the acts.

This would make Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to provide such compensation.

Repeat offenders would also see their fines double, going up to $100,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations.
