North Perth has approved a motion brought up in council of acknowledgment to be used in formal meetings.
The motion is for North Perth to adopt an Indigenous land acknowledgment which is consistent with other government authorities in the region.
Lee Anne Andriessen says it’s overdue for the municipality to acknowledge this.
“I really wish it had already been done before this time. I believe waiting any longer would be disrespectful to Indigenous families in our area.” said Andriessen
Andriessen adding it would be a big step forward in reconciliation.
“Waiting any longer would show our lack of understanding, lack of training and understanding and education of what is required to be a part and a start of reconciliation.”
Council voted strongly in favour the motion to adopt the acknowledgment.
“We acknowledge that we are on the traditional land of the Anishnaabe people. We wish to recognize the long history of Indigenous People of Canada and show our respect to them today. We recognize their stewardship of the land, may we all live with respect on this land a live in peace and friendship.”
