The Ontario government is investing $13.5 million in a new poultry research centre in Elora.

The government, the Agriculture Research Institute of Ontario and the province’s four poultry industry boards signed a memorandum of understanding to invest into the new poultry research centre to advance research and drive innovation for the poultry sector.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Lisa Thompson says they are focused on enhancing research and innovation capabilities across the agri-food sector.

Ontario’s poultry industry includes more than 1200 chicken and turkey producers and 432 egg farmers across the province who will see the benefits from this new research centre which will begin construction in Elora in 2024 and be completed by 2026.

Research conducted will support animal welfare, reproduction and nutrition as well as meat quality and safety with results being shared with poultry farmers and the business sector.
