A lack of phone service locally has Perth-Wellington MP John Nater taking aim at Rogers.
It’s been a well known issue for years of poor cell service in multiple areas across the region and Nater has taken notice.
In a letter to President and CEO of Rogers Communications, Tony Staffieri, Nater notes in 2024 he was informed Rogers had plans to install a new tower in Monkton but today there still is nothing operational.
Nater has urged Rogers to make the right investments to ensure all areas have reliable cell service who adds this is a deeply concerning issue when emergencies arise.
“This is a safety issue as well if folks can’t connect a call in the case of an emergency we are having major challenges there. We want to see this new tower, it’s built but there’s nothing on it and that’s the problem.” said Nater.
Nater also noted this includes Bell and their poor coverage, citing corporate greed on the lack of local investment.
“They’re focusing on areas where its the highest profit margin and they don’t see that profit margin in rural communities but the reality is they have the regulatory environment that’s beneficial to them that makes them billions and in exchange for that they have to be investing in delivering the service they promised to rural communities and that simply is not happening.”
Last month Rogers spent $4.35 billion to acquire the remaining 25 per cent stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
