Marine Fatality in Mapleton Township – Charges Laid

Charges follow a 5 month long investigation

On July 26th last year at approximately 4:06pm Wellington County OPP responded to a boating incident at Conestogo Lake, near Wellington County Road 11 in the Township of Mapleton. It was reported that a 13 year old female sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by a boat.

Rescuers pulled an unconscious victim from the water. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wellington County OPP conducted an extensive 5 month long investigation with the assistance of OPP Technical Collision Investigators, Wellington County OPP Crime Unit and Wellington County OPP Marine Unit officers.

As a result a 60 year old male of Brampton has been charged with these Canadian Shipping Act Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations:

  • operating a vessel in a careless manner contrary to regulations
  • failing to take reasonable steps to ensure safety of craft and persons aboard contrary to regulations
  • operations of a vessel in an unsafe manner contrary to regulations

The accused is scheduled to appear in a Guelph Court on February 12th.
