It’s a milestone for freshwater species recovery in Canada done with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.
On Wednesday, teams with the Conservation Authority alongside Fisheries and Oceans Canada among other partners were able to reintroduced hundreds of kidneyshell mussels to the wild.
This marks the first freshwater mussel reintroduction in Canadian waters support the recovery of an aquatic species under the Species at Risk Act.
Medway Creek was chosen as a suitable location to restore the endangered species to part of its historic range.
Over the next few years, scientists will monitor and reintroduce populations to assess survival, growth and reproduction to help guide future freshwater mussel recover efforts across Canada.
