Canada has a new governor general.
History is made as Mary Simon will take the role and be the first Indigenous Governor General.
“I can announce, that on my recommendation her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has approved the appointment of Ms. Mary Simon as the 30th Governor General of Canada.” said Trudeau.
Simon, from Nunavik, Quebec has been a longtime advocate for Inuit rights and culture and is an officer of the Order of Canada.
The announcement comes just five months after former Governor General Julie Payette resigned after a workplace conduct review.
Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada acted as administrator after Payette’s resignation.
