The Huron County OPP have issued an advisory to residents this week warning that unsolicited messages promising a refund of the MTO license plate fee could create headache and financial loss if you happen to fall victim.

Last week two victims from Huron County reported they received the text message from scammers notifying them that the MTO and Service Canada had validation permit refunds for them.

Upon clicking onto the link the victims were asked to provide pin numbers and passwords. Fortunately both contact their banks and bank cards and they were cancelled prior to sustaining any monetary loss.

Police remind the public that Smishing scams are an active method for scammers. Never open links from text messages.

Also never give personal information, credit or banking information to anyone over the phone, letter, email, fax or by any other means of communication.
