The first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus has been confirmed in a horse from Wellington County.

The horse had no travel history, indicating the virus is present locally.

EEEV is rare but potentially serious mosquito borne virus which mainly affects horses with a low risk to humans.

Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical officer of Health says they remain proactive in monitoring and controlling mosquito populations in the region but everyone should take measures to avoid bites.

Symptoms of EEEV includes headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, seizures and behavioral changes. There is no risk of human to human transmission.
