While there has not been any reported cases of monkeypox within the region, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is keeping an eye on the situation.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Nicola Mercer says monkeypox is a close relative to smallpox of which there is both treatment and a vaccine available.

Mercer also brought note the smallpox vaccine was produced in Palmerston from 1885 to 1916 as for a moment, Palmerston was the smallpox vaccine centre for Ontario.

Mercer also mentioned should cases arrive in the area, they are prepared and will have treatment and vaccines available as they remain on alert.
