North Perth council spent time during Monday’s council meeting who looked over a change of voting methods for the 2026 municipal election.
Alternative voting methods and voting locations with results from a survey ahead of the 2022 election showed ranked internet and online voting as the most preferred methods ahead of paper ballots with mail in voting ranked last.
Many local municipalities changed their voting methods for 2022 with Perth East and West Perth using internet and telephone voting.
Some councilors such as Matt Richardson were torn on the idea of removing paper ballots.
“I don’t know if the new shiny thing is always the better thing, I’m somewhat torn on it but I’m surprised that its actually cheaper (than paper ballots)” said.
A motion to have paper ballots, telephone and internet voting was defeated with council then opting to have paper ballots as the 2026 voting method.
