Minto council has given its support for a battery energy storage system in Harriston.

It was discussed last month Nexus Renewables made a delegation for acquiring 200 John Street in the Harriston Industrial Park who had plans to submit the site for a battery energy storage facility which ended with council directing staff get a report to bring back.

Earlier this week staff returned with the report which opened up discussion.

The Minto Fire Department expressed their concern citing in the rare chance a battery or rack catches fire as there is no current method to extinguish lithium ion battery fires.

Despite the written concern, council approved to support the proposed battery energy storage system.
