Is North Perth looking at adding a community flagpole? That still remains up in the air.
Despite a recommendation of not having a community flagpole and to have staff review and make updates to the Policy for the Flying of Banners and Flags, council voted the other way around in a 4-6 vote.
Those in favour of the motion included Mayor Todd Kasenberg with councilors, Sarah Blazek, Allan Rothwell and Lee-Anne Andriessen.
Those against the motion were Deputy Mayor Doug Kellem, Dave Johnston, Neil Anstett, Matt Duncan and Marc Noordam.
The topic of having a community flagpole as mentioned by Deputy Mayor Doug Kellum mainly revolves around supporting community flags, just not on municipal property.
“I’ve had many many people contact me that are in support of flags but not in support of the location at the municipal building and I’ve not had one person contact me for the flag to stand alone at the municipal building so I’m not favour of this recommendation.” said Kellum.
Prior to the vote by council, North Perth Mayor Todd Kasenberg who was in favour of keeping community flags flying at the municipal building says its by flying flags there, they show they’re inclusion while adding given the history of flags being vandalized, its the presence of sharing a building with OPP, that flags remain safe.
