The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has signed a 20 year agreement with the Ontario Minsitry of Transportation (MTO) to help establish, maintain and monitor 22.6 hectares of tallgrass prairie habitat for Eastern Meadowlarks and Bobolinks.
These grassland birds are classified as Species at Risk and as threatened in Ontario.
The new tallgrass prairies will compensate for habitat lost to highway improvements taken by the MTO in southwestern Ontario.
The Ministry is providing project funding.
The conversation authority will establish the lands at two sites which will provide a habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species which includes insect pollinators.
