A Mississauga based company has plead guilty in connection to an employee who was injured on the job at a Stratford landfill.

Canadian Waste Management Inc was fined $50,000 after an employee was critically injured at the landfill on Romeo Street dating back to December 2020.

The company employee at the site was emptying a waste collection truck, using machinery of the truck to push waste from the hopper towards the tailgate to be emptied when they have found a garbage bag had fallen behind the ram that was pushing waste.

While the machine was still running, the employee took a plastic snow brush to move the bag closer, reaching into the truck to grab the bag when the workers jacket got caught in the machinery and was critically injured.

Inspection later found the safety plate which normally covers moving parts in the hopper was missing, violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The company was also imposed a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge. The surcharge is credited to a special government fund to assist victims of crime.
