The Cargill meat processing plan in Guelph remains closed temporarily due to an outbreak of Covid-19.

The temporary closure will have a significant impact on the Ontario cattle industry.

The lack of processing could result in farmers holding onto cattle longer, which costs them money because they have additional overhead and have to keep feeing them. This at the same time as the cattle losing value because they become older than what’s preferring by the plant.

The other result could be farmers then having to ship their cattle across Canada out west. A market that is already competitive.
