There’s been some changes at the Ellice Swamp in Perth East.
Being one of the largest remaining natural area and wetland in the Upper Thames River watershed, buckthorn has been replaced with native trees and shrubs in the 1100 hectare swamp.
The area is recognized as a significant groundwater recharge zone and Environmentally Sensitive Area in Perth County.
In fall last year, staff established 16, 5×5 plots with buckthorn plots being treated with herbicide and manually pulled with staff this April removing the dead, woody brush and planted them with native trees and shrubs to benefit local wildlife and help to compete with the regenerating buckthorn remaining in the seed bank.
