A bat in Centre Wellington has tested positive for rabies, the first confirmed case in a bat across Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph.

One person has begun a precautionary treatment protocol for potential exposure.

Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health says while rabies is rare, it can be fatal when its left untreated.

Public health encourages the public to take steps to protect themselves against rabies including avoiding contact with wild animals and making sure your pet is vaccinated against rabies and to supervise them while outdoors.
