The Avon Maitland District School Board shared word that today is the 1st ever National Ribbon Skirt Day.
A ribbon skirt is a traditional garment worn by Indigenous Women.
Ribbons are applied often in horizontal stripes, onto long skirts.
The colour of each ribbon has special significance to the wear.
Ribbon skirts reflect Indigenous culture and heritage.
The day was inspired by an event back in 2021, when then 10-year-old Isabella Kulak was shamed for wearing her ribbon skirt to her Saskatchewan school.
The day is now held annually on January 4th.
