The Township of Wellington North discussed the implications of the Provincial Bill 23: entitled “the More Homes, Built Faster Act” and how it could impact things such as development charges.

The Council received a report  on the legislation on December 5th with Mayor Lennox says that a last-minute change to the phasing in period of Bill 23 is of concern.

“Previously if your development charge by-law was passed before June 1st there was no phasing in required. But now they’ve rolled that back 6 months so if your by-law was passed before January 1st there is no phasing in required but after there is phasing in required. So it will directly affect us here.”

Estimates on how much it could impact the Municipality, and its taxpayers, in terms of covering the costs of facilitating growth in Wellington North were not discussed in the meeting.

“I think the potential here is if we don’t have the resources through development charges to build infrastructure to facilitate growth, we may have to say we don’t have the money to facilitate growth.”

Mayor Lennox added that he expects to be a large topic of discussion at the ROMA Convention January 22nd to 24th in Toronto.
