Wellington North has approved a limit on dogs within the township down from 10 to 5 with an exemption for Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD) which gained a bulk of discussion in Monday’s council meeting.
A discussion on livestock guardian dogs was done earlier this month with a report presented back to council this week with discussion going back and forth.
Councilor Lisa Hern brought forward an amendment to remove the fee for registering a dog which is $20 for livestock guardian dogs but council did not go forward with it.
Penny Renken says at the end of the day, a livestock guardian dog saves farmers plenty of money.
“The small fee that is being asked to pay for an LGD would be a saving to the owner because those dogs save the owner a lot of money by not having to hire a person to do the work that the dog could do.” said Renken.
Residents in Wellington North can apply for an exemption but will need to meet the towns criteria which factors in farm business registration, zoning of land owned and how much livestock per location.
