Wellington North Looking at Ward Boundary Changes

Wellington North council has now begun to dig into how the township’s electoral ward boundaries could need a change to respond to the growing population.

Clerk Karen Wallace presented to council on May 8th on the topic which sparked conversation on how to better have a fair distribution of electors.

As it stands, Wellington North is formed by four councilors each in their ward with a mayor who is elected at large.

Councilor Sherry Burke says many residents she’s heard from are in favour of an at large system adding the ward representation is dated.

“As we are elected officials we should be looking at the community as a whole not just as a specific ward. If we’re going to look at it we need to look at all of the options” said Burke.

Wallace will return to a future meeting with a report examining available options for an at large electoral system.

In Wellington County, nearby municipalities also use an at large system including Minto, Mapleton, Erin and Puslinch.
