The Wellington County OPP is investigating a “distraction” theft in Fergus on January 7th.
Officers responded to report of the theft that occurred at a parking lot of a business on St. David Street North. It was reported one individual distracted the victim in the lot while the second then stole the victim’s wallet from the vehicle.
The victim’s credit card was later used to make a purchase at another business and video surveillance of the two using the card was obtained.
Distraction thefts occur in stores or parking lots and some tips to help protect yourself include:
- Always be aware of your surroundings
- Keep your purse or wallet secured and with you
- If someone appears suspicious and randomly tries to engage in a conversation, pay close attention to your property
- Report any suspicious activity to the police, and if a suspect is still nearby, call 911.
