Walkerton Businesses form “Keep Walkerton Connected” Facebook Group

A group of concerned Walkerton business owners has banded together to start a Facebook Group entitled “Keep Walkerton Connected”.

The reason for the collaboration is to have their voices heard regarding an upcoming bridge replacement that is set to close the Durham Street Bridge for 18 months.

The bridge sits along Bruce Road 4 at the east end of town and spans the Saugeen River.

Group member and business owner Nicole Thomas describes the plan for residents to get around town while the bridge is closed.

“They are providing an almost 7km detour, around and outside of town, essentially cutting off our main street from any flow of traffic for around 18 months.”

The option of a temporary bridge, similar to what Bruce County built in Paisley for the new bridge there, was estimated to have a cost of $6.3 million dollars plus engineering.

There is another Walkerton community meeting planned for this summer.

The date will be posted to the website setup for the project.
