As many as 10,000 turtle hatchlings are expected to be released across the Thames River in the coming weeks.

The eggs of over 600 turtle nests were all identified as species at risk and have filled up incubators in the turtle lab of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

Many of the turtles were found as Eastern Spiny Softshells who nest in floodplains.

With the help of the Southern Ontario At Risk Reptiles program the nests were recovered.

The conservation authority says without the SOARR program, 100 per cent of the eggs would have been lost to flooding which occurred across the area earlier this month.
