United Way Perth Huron’s Social Research & Planning Council recently released their Future of Housing Report.
The report dives deep into the issue of housing faced across the region as well as the impacts it has locally.
Director of Research for the council, Joelle Lamport-Lewis says the issue on affordability is impacted from various aspects.
“The affordability factor is directly impacted when we see things like the pandemic and the urban migration to rural communities. The prices are going up but the income levels of the workforce is not keeping pace with the market.” said Lewis.
Lewis adds the issues surrounding rentals can also be felt, which can drive away youth and new workers.
“Younger populations and new workforce employees, once they leave there is no options. It’s not like there is new stock being made at the same pace it’s being consumed. You’re seeing a gap from simply access to those units.”
