UGDSB Lowers Flags to Honour 215 Residential School Lives

The Upper Grand District School Board will be lowering their flags to honour the 215 children whos remains were found at a former residential schools in Kamloops, British Columbia.

In a release, the school board writes “as we collectively mourn this horrific loss, we acknowledge that there cannot be reconciliation without truth. The lowering of flags is not enough; substantial work must be done in our communities, schools and systems to face the historical and current atrocities faced by Indigenous communities”

All provincial and federal buildings have lowered their flags to half-mast.

Remains were found at the former residential school, some as young as 3 years old which operated from 1890-1968.
