The Upper Grand District School Board is making a plea to the province to consider installing stop-arm cameras on school buses after multiple complaints of drivers still passing stopped school buses when loading or dropping off kids.
This year school buses were equipped with flashing amber lights to indicate a stop is about to occur, though trustees with the board say this hasn’t done enough to stop drivers.
Failing to stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended comes with fines of $400-2000 and six demerit points on a first offence.
Multiple offences can lead up to possible jail time up to six months.
Trustees voted to send a letter to the Minister of Education and Attorney General.
