The 68th annual Mitchell U13 Hockey Tournament is taking place this weekend and the tournament committee is showing their support for the outdoor rink project honouring Carter Schoonderwoerd.
Carter, like many young Canadians loved the game of hockey spending many hours at the rink and became a key part of many local teams from the Mitchell Meteors, Huron-Perth AAA Lakers, St Marys Lincolns and Stratford Warriors, eventually being drafted in 2018 by the Peterborough Petes in the OHL.
Carter who was found deceased on his family farm in 2021 from suicide saw the community usher droves of support for Mitchell Minor Hockey is his memory.
With $20,000 raised alone, the idea came about to use these funds and continue going for an outdoor rink at Keterson Park.
Carters father, Joe says fundraising such as this and the support shown just goes to show how well a community bands together.
“It gives them a sense of good, they are doing something for the community, they’re helping out, helping out their neighbour.’ said Schoonderwoerd.
Another $50,000 is needed to get raised.
The U13 tournament taking place this weekend is using funds from the silent auction and from a breakfast on Saturday from 8am-1pm to support the outdoor rink project.
