Stratford council has opted to not support the basic income program in Canada.
On April 24th, United Way Perth Huron and Huron Perth Public Health advocated for a basic income program and asked council to send a letter of support for the program to the federal government.
Basic income is an unconditional supplement to boost people not making a living wage.
Three letters were presented to council recently, basic income for income security to the provincial and federal governments and increasing social assistance rates to the provincial government.
The letters to support basic income did not pass in council, but they did vote to support the letter to advocate for an increase in social assistance rates.
