For the first time in over a century, the Spiny Soft-shell Turtle population has been increasing in the Thames River.

That’s according to Upper Thames River Conservation Authority Species at Risk Biologist Scott Gillingwater.

Last year the Southern Ontario at Risk Reptiles or SOARR program had one of its most successful years with the hatching and release of more than 10,000 native turtles back into the wild, locating and protecting dozens of endangered turtles and snakes as well as building new nesting and cover habitats.

Scott adds the efforts really do work but they do still have a long way to go.
