Unlike the 2022, municipal election, Minto council will not be entirely brought in by acclamation.
As it stands there are 8 candidates up for councilor with some seeking re-election and new faces looking for a spot in the chambers.
Among those new faces is long time Harriston resident Shawn McDonald who wanted to run in 2022 but as he had just welcomed his first child, he didn’t feel it was the right time.
McDonald, the owner of McDonald Chiropractic has also served on the Minto Chamber for 8 years including being a Chair in his time serving.
McDonald says he hopes to bring a unique approach to the council chambers given his background.
“As a business owner, a healthcare professional and growing up here I’ve got a unique perspective I kind of have a different eye and I can empathize or sympathize with people and where they’re coming from and what they want. I want to be that liaison or voice that bridge between what people want and what is actually going to happen. I’ve got what I think is a few different lenses and approaches that can make council better or help make those decisions.” said McDonald.
McDonald adds the collaborative work with council, town staff, the downtown committees and beyond have worked so well to keep Minto running and he wants to be part of that success going forward.
“I just want to make sure that continues, I want to be part of the puzzle to keep pushing the envelope forward and setting the benchmark of our community. We have national awards now for certain things and its amazing to see a small community to win these awards.”
Nominations for town council and school board trustee are being accepted until August 21st with the municipal election being October 26th.
