A new report says more than 40 per cent of farm operators will retire over the next decade.
A report from the Royal Bank of Canada, Boston Consulting Group Centre for Canada’s Future and Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph says the country will be short around 24,000 general farm, nursery and greenhouse operators.
The report also notes around 66 per cent of producers don’t have a succession plan in place.
The report also says the shortage will come at a critical moment as Canada’s agricultural sector will need to produce much more food for a growing world population but also must cut emissions to meet climate targets.
